The sixth edition of the association's annual fintech report is titled: "New prospects for the Fintech Industry." The report provides an overview of the development of the fintech industry in Sweden over the past year, describes its challenges, and delves into three policy proposals that could improve the conditions for Swedish fintech.

The proportion of companies that raised capital increased slightly during the year and there has also been an improvement in the access to capital. A similar trend also applies to the workforce, with a higher proportion of companies having expanded their workforce while fewer employees have been let go. The regulatory burden remains heavy for many member companies. Moreover, just under a third of the companies have had difficulty getting a bank account with a Swedish bank

SweFinTech's goal is for the fintech industry to continue to grow and be competitive. In this report we have compiled our members' views on the development of the fintech industry.

The Swedish FinTech Association presented the fifth edition of its annual fintech report on the first day of Sthlm Fintech Week, February 14th. This year’s report is titled “An Industry in Transition.” The report provides an overview of the development of the fintech sector in Sweden over the past year, outlines its challenges, and offers concrete proposals for fostering the industry’s continued growth.

The Swedish fintech industry remains influenced by the changing macroeconomic landscape. The percentage of companies that raised capital in 2023 decreased compared to previous years, and access to capital remains difficult. The percentage of companies that need to apply for new capital in the coming year dropped to only 39%, indicating that businesses are shifting focus toward profitability. 43% of companies are already profitable, while 20% are at risk of going bankrupt within a year.

The industry continues to face challenges with a complex regulatory system, while access to infrastructure has worsened over the year. The percentage of companies experiencing issues with de-risking has doubled, from 18% to 39%.

To support the industry moving forward, the report highlights the need for regulatory guidance for innovative companies, an in-depth analysis of competition in the financial market, and involving more stakeholders in efforts to future-proof financial infrastructure.

The Swedish FinTech Association presented the fourth edition of its annual FinTech report on February 15th during Stockholm FinTech Week. This year’s report is titled "From growth to profitability." As in previous years, the report provides an overview of the development of Swedish FinTech over the past year, outlines the challenges faced by the industry, and presents concrete proposals to promote its continued growth.

The Swedish FinTech industry is being impacted by the changing macroeconomic environment. Capital intake has decreased slightly, although it is in line with levels from previous years, and companies have noticed increased caution among investors in 2022. Nearly half of the companies will need to apply for new capital in 2023, with runway periods ranging from six months to three years if the capital does not materialize. At the same time, there is optimism for the future, with 88% of companies expecting increased growth in 2023.

The industry continues to face challenges with a complex regulatory system, and there is a perception that understanding of FinTech has declined in 2022. To support the industry’s growth, the report calls for clearer guidance, the establishment of a regulatory sandbox to encourage innovation, and political measures to improve competition in the financial market.

During Sthlm Fintech Weeks first day on the 19th of April, Swedish FinTech Association presented the third edition of the association's annual fintech report - this year called "Swedish FinTech is Here to Stay". As in previous years, this year's report will give an up-to-date picture of the Swedish fintech industry, describe how the industry has developed over the past year and address the various challenges facing Swedish fintech companies.

The Swedish fintech industry continues to grow and as of 2021, it comprises over 500 companies and employs approximately 25 000 people. It is growing and 91 percent of SweFinTech member companies are planning to recruit during 2022. The global investments in fintech companies almost doubled in 2021, and in Sweden investments increased by 72 percent in 2021 compared to 2020.

There is still a need for funding, primarily with smaller companies which is visible amongst SweFinTech member companies - 43 percent need to raise capital in 2022. In order to maintain the successful ecosystem that has fostered the Swedish technology miracle, Swedish decision-makers need to improve how capital markets function and create a competitive regulatory environment that functions internationally as well.

FINTECH report 2021.

2021

On the 8th of April 2021, SweFinTech presented the second edition of the fintech report - "A Growing Industry Despite Challenges". The report shows that the Swedish fintech industry continues to grow but some of the industry's challenges have become clearer as a result of the pandemic.

The Swedish fintech industry continues to grow and now consists of more than 450 companies that employ over 10,000 people. 91% of the companies plan to expand their operations in 2021, and there is a great need for recruitment as 93% of the companies plan to recruit in 2021. Several Swedish fintech companies are strong internationally and the industry has good prospects.

The report highlights five themes that are important for the industry's development in the years to come: the industry's situation due to Covid-19, the need for recruitment, how the industry is affected by policies and regulations, access to the financial infrastructure, and the issue of sustainability.

FINTECH report 2020.

2020

KONKURRENSKRAFT
